- The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book - by Sandee Cohen and Robin Williams. A wonderful book that addresses the same subject matter as this website. It is unlikely that Marvin's Corner will ever be published in print, because this book fills the niche. In fact, one of the reasons this site exists is that there was no book like it available when I did most of the work. Forget the "Non-Designer" part of the title - if you weren't a conscientious student of design, you wouldn't be reading this book.
- Adobe Print Publishing Guide - this 100 page booklet is distributed with Pagemaker and InDesign; also available from fine booksellers everywhere. A concise and lucid introduction to printing technology.
- Type and Layout - by Colin Wheildon. A revelation. A short, easily digestible report on the outcome of a scientific study about how graphic design impacts reader's comprehension of printed material. Spirited introduction by uber-ad-exec David "boiled in oil!" Ogilvy.
- Real World Scanning and Halftones - by David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman, and Steve Roth. A refreshingly practical standout in the crowded field of Photoshop help tomes. Instead of "Check out this cool image manipulation trick... and this one... and this one..." you'll find solid advice about how to make those images come out the way they're supposed to when printed. Oh, and when you're finished, you'll have learned some cool tricks without even realizing it.
- The Design of Everyday Things - by Donald A. Norman. Not immediately applicable to CD and multimedia package design, but an entertaining read that will convince you that design matters.
