Gang Run Printing

In most cases, when your job is printed, it won't be on the press by itself; it will share a 19"x25" press sheet with several other jobs. When 1200 or so sheets have been sent through the press, they are cut apart, folded, perforated, etc., and the various jobs are shipped to their various destinations. Gang run printing is what makes CD orders under 3000 pieces economical; without it, printing costs would be much higher than they are.

However, some of the economic benefits of gang run printing are lost if you need something out of the ordinary.  It seems logical that printing 2 colors, say Pantone 032 Red and Black would be cheaper than printing 4 colors (CMYK).  Not so! All of the printers we use have printing presses that are set up to print CMYK on one side and black ink only on the other. These dedicated presses handle nothing but CD and multimedia packaging all day long, every working day.  Any deviation from the standard configuration requires extra work and therefore, a custom setup surcharge.  If you want to print CMYK on both sides, that's extra. If you want to add a custom ink to the front, that's extra; the back, that's extra; both front and back, that's extra extra.
